How Do I Change My Address With Social Security?

Social Security does not keep a current address for you until you become a beneficiary. At that point, we may send you letters (even if your check goes direct deposit) about your benefits. Sending out a COLA (cost of living adjustment) letter each year there is an adjustment is the kind of letter we might be sending you. Maybe you worked after retirement and the amount of your earnings increased the amount of your benefit. We would send a letter explaining the increase and when you should expect to see the increase in your check.

Because we may mail you letters about your benefits, we need to have a current address on record for you at all times. (For example, starting this month in April, all Medicare beneficiaries will receive new cards in 2018. Not everyone will receive their new card in April.  The mailings will continue into 2019.  Make sure that your address with Social Security is correct, so that you receive your new card.)

If you need to update your address with Social Security, you can quickly and easily do it online by using your my Social Security account. (Unfortunately, this service is not available to Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries at this time.) If you don’t have one, you can sign up here: www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. You can use the same link to get to your account, so you can update an address.  Keeping your address current helps Social Security connect with you when we need to share information with you.  Make sure your address is current by checking it today.
