How Do I Change The Direct Deposit Of My Social Security Check?

Have you changed banks and want to change where your Social Security check goes? Changing where your check goes is as easy as logging into your personal my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.

If you already receive benefits (retirement, survivors, or disability) and you have a bank account, you can start or update your direct deposit by using the My Profile Tab in my Social Security. In addition, you can decide when your change will take effect.

This service is not currently available for people who receive SSI or do not have a U.S. mailing address.

After making the change online, you may wonder how long it take to change. It depends on your monthly payment date (does your check come on the third Wednesday of the month?) and when you contact us. Your benefits should go to your new account by the second payment after you give Social Security the account information for the new account. Sometimes the change happens by the next month.

Here’s the secret for success in changing your direct deposit. Don’t close the old account until after the first time it goes to your new account. If you close the account before Social Security is able to establish the new account information, your check will be returned to the U. S. Treasury. You will need a replacement check which result in slower delivery. So, please do not close your old bank account until your check goes to the new account.

You can also update your direct deposit information by calling our toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213. Most people call between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., but we provide service through that number from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. no matter where you live in the U.S.

Choose the easy way and change your direct deposit info online at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.
